Derby St George’s Day

St George’s Day in Derby city for 2023 will be held on SATURDAY 22nd APRIL

11:00am general traditional dancing at The Ram and Sadlergate

11:45am St George’s Day community musicians will lead the merry band of dancers to the Market Place from St James’ Street, along with St George and his dragon!

From 12:00 noon onwards there will be entertainment and participation events on the Market Place and at St Peter’s Cross, concluding with more traditional dancing at The Ram and Sadlergate, around 2.30pm.

FRIDAY 23rd APRIL 2021 had to be St George’s Day at home in Derby

There were dragons, singers, dancers, more dragons, mummers’ plays, St George himself, more dancers, and, oh yes, DRAGONS!!!!

The Derbyshire Youth Folk Ensemble, supported by The Derbyshire Music Education Hub, performed two hornpipes they had learnt and recorded especially for a Broom Dance spectacular performed here by Rebecca Kell:

We also made great use of a lovely song the children of Derby wrote together in 2016 and turned it into a community online sing together as a beautiful soundscape to these lovely St George and the Dragon Well Dressings – do sing along!!!:

Past St George’s Day Celebrations in Derby:

This collaboration of Derby LIVE and FOLK3D has culminated in a massive event each year since 2013 in the centre of Derby city in honour of St George’s Day.  Approximately 10,000 people each year have taken part in / passed through the event on the Market Square, where there have been displays of Morris, Sword, Clog, Broom and Maypole Dancing and Mummers’ Plays.
